     Third Grade Book Giveaway

The club had its 7th annual third grade book giveaway. Members of the club gathered at Winton Woods Elementary School in Forest Park on Friday, January 15. They visited each of the third grade classrooms and gave each  student their own copy of Stellaluna. There is a label in the front cover for the student to write his or her name in it. This year there were 400 students,  hence we purchased 400 copies of the book from the publisher.

Stellaluna is a hard-cover, full-color book with pictures and text. The title character is a fruit bat who gets separated from her mother. So the story delivers a good message about being different and being accepted. (Fruit bats eat, well, fruit. Black bats eat bugs.) So along with a nice story about acceptance there is a good science lesson as well. There is even a scientific appendix, all at a third grade level.
